Healthcare Reform is working as planned, with good reason, as it will reduce the (slave/forced) labor force by 2.5 million

Health Care Law Projected to Cut the Labor Force

WASHINGTON — A Congressional Budget Office analysis released Tuesday predicted that the Affordable Care Act would shrink the work force by the equivalent of more than two million full-time positions.   NY Times

No, CBO did not say Obamacare will kill 2 million jobs

The Fact Checker had to repeatedly explain that the Congressional Budget Office never said that the Affordable Care Act “killed” 800,000 jobs by 2021. Now, the CBO has released an updated estimate, nearly the triple the size of the earlier one: 2.3 million in 2021.   The Washington Post. FACT CHECKER: The Truth Behind the Rhetoric

Healthcare Reform is working as planned and it's fantastic news for our country and our people.  The CBO (congressional budget office) projects that 2.5 million full-time positions in the next ten years.

Because workers will CHOOSE NOT TO WORK FULL-TIME.

In my educated opinion, this is a totally healthy choice from a mental health and self-care perspective.  So many people feel forced to get and keep jobs that they don't want, are bad for them, and don't even need to be full-time positions.  Probably a third of full-time job hours are spent by employees not working, simply because they have to be there, it's a stable job, and they can't afford to leave the job because they need health care and so do their children and/or spouses.

That's one of the purposes of this reform measure, to reform the system away from this quid-pro-quo situation that is simply taken for granted now.  FT work means benefits and a salary, and that also lots of times means working over-time for no extra pay.  We want people to HAVE more choice so that they AREN'T tied to their jobs because they need healthcare and insurance!

Corporations and the power-brokers in Washington want you to have less choice and to keep you as a slave to their needs.  Opponents of the ACA, who derisively call it Obamacare (namely GOP Republicans) will spin this as bad for "business" and the economy and for people in general.

But, it's fantastic for everyone - individuals, families, children, for the job market, especially job seekers, and anyone who values being able to have control over their own lives.  Congratulations, Americans, we are finally doing what's right and best for us.  Let's keep it up!

News: ADHD Can Cause Lifelong Problems, Study Finds - US News and World Report

ADHD Can Cause Lifelong Problems, Study Finds

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder that persists into adulthood may affect physical and mental health

If children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, continue to have the condition in adulthood, a new study suggests that they may face an array of physical and mental health issues.
The study, which spanned more than 30 years, found that people who had ADHD as teens and adults face a greater risk of stress, work problems, financial troubles, physical health issues and additional mental health issues, such as depression or antisocial personality disorder.
They also had difficulty in terms of work and experienced a great deal of financial stress.  82 percent higher odds of having impaired physical health. They were also more than twice as likely to have another mental health problem
The study included 551 children. Seventy-two of those children were diagnosed with ADHD in 1975 when they were between the ages of 14 and 16. The researchers followed up with the children as they grew, and the final of five outcome surveys was given at an average age of 37.

Quit Smoking NOW Resources: Identify Your Triggers

Smoking Triggers

What are your "triggers"?
Certain things trigger, or turn on, your need for a cigarette. They can be moods, feelings, places, or things you do. Knowing your triggers helps you stay in control. Put a check next to things that tempt you to smoke:
Feeling stressed
Feeling down
Talking on the phone
Drinking liquor, like wine or beer
Watching TV
Driving
Finishing a meal
Playing cards
Taking a work break
Being with other smokers
Drinking coffee
Seeing someone else smoke
Cooling off after a fight

Quit Smoking NOW Resources: Identify Reasons for Quitting

Reasons for Quitting

Here are some examples of reasons to quit:
I will feel healthier right away. I will have more energy and better focus. My senses of smell and taste will be better. I will have whiter teeth and fresher breath. I will cough less and breathe better.
I will be healthier the rest of my life. I will lower my risk for cancer, heart attacks, strokes, early death, cataracts, and skin wrinkling.
I will make my partner, friends, family, kids, grandchildren, and co-workers proud of me.
I will be proud of myself. I will feel more in control of my life. I will be a better role model for others.
I will no longer expose others to my second-hand smoke.
I will have a healthier baby. (If you or your partner is pregnant)
I will have more money to spend.
I won't have to worry: "When will I get to smoke next?" or "What do I do when I'm in a smokefree place?"
My other reasons are:

Lifehacker: Breakfast in a mug in one minute (and why are we only giving it ONE minute?)

Make Breakfast in a Mug in Just One MinuteWell, breakfast IS the most important meal of the day.  I think so many of us just don’t have the time, or maybe we aren’t hungry, yet?  I think caffeine in the coffee has a lot to do with suppressing the appetite when you get started with it early every morning.  I find that my appetite doesn’t come around until 10am after having coffee. Anyway, the evils of coffee and caffeine, no matter how good they taste, aren’t the point of this post.  The positive, that breakfast is important, healthy, and yes necessary, is the point.

Here’s an article on Lifehacker.com that talks about how to do it quickly.  As mentioned, you can add any numbers of ingredients to spruce up the meal and make it even more healthy.  Getting something in your stomach in the mornings is putting you ahead of the game, anyway, though!

Interestingly, though, the comments part of the article is (as usual) one of the most interesting things about it,  There’s a debate about whether or not reducing breakfast to one minute means that we seriously need to consider how packed, filled, and fast-paced our lives has become.  This is what I am putting my money – we need reset our priorities when it comes down to needing tips like this, eh?  It’s not that we don’t want to do things that are quick and easy, but there’s something to be said for Quality of Life and taking our time with such essential things as our health and having healthy bodies and minds.

So, here’s my compromise:  I was a cook in the Army and have been cooking for 25 years.... I liked this idea enough to read the article, but the commenters are mostly right I think.  I don't seem to have time to eat in the mornings.  It does ONLY take two minutes to cook an egg in a pan and it tastes better.  Many here have mentioned cleaning the pan and how long that takes, but for my life it makes sense to simply put the pan back into the oven (with the spatula as well) so that you can take it out again the next day or the day after.  Wash it once a week, at most.  Either cast-iron, or non-stick, you're only talking about some oil left in the pan, which doesn't mean it's "dirty."  And, it doesn't go bad or make you sick.  So, that's even easier.

As an after thought, I just want to add here that for my life, I want to be more healthy, eat the breakfast even if I’m not hungry – or, at least, change some things so that a normal hunger is what I wake up with!  so, maybe it’s time to prioritize things like rest, going to sleep earlier, trying to resist the natural inclination of a student to stay up later and later at night.  The morning is such a beautiful and peaceful time.  The night can be peaceful, too, so I vacillate between which is more peaceful.  The point is that I need and love peace and quiet.  I need to move to the woods :-)

CDC: Developmental Disabilities Affect 1 In 7 U.S. Kids : Shots - Health Blog : NPR

A survey of American parents finds the prevalence of developmental disabilities has increased.

CDC: Developmental Disabilities Affect 1 In 7 U.S. Kids : Shots - Health Blog : NPR

Not only is ADHD disabling, but it's developmentally disabling, as well.

A couple of students in my MSW class debated that ADHD is not disabling. "It's simply a matter of learning skills to work around it." Well, most challenges are, no? However, how does this answer the question of how to deal with this neurological disorder? And, yes, it's definitely neurological, as well.

News from NASW: Diversity Education

Congressional Hearing about Educating Diverse Students

The House Education and Labor Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary and Secondary Education held a hearing on March 18, 2010 titled “Elementary and Secondary Education Act Reauthorization: Addressing the Needs of Diverse Students” to examine how schools can appropriately educate low-income, minority, English Language Learners, disabled, Native American, and homeless students within the context of reauthorizing the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), currently known as the No Child Left Behind Act.

This goal was expressed by Subcommittee Chairman Representative Dale Kildee (D-MI) in his opening statement: “While the No Child Left Behind Act shed light on the inequalities in our education system, it unfortunately did not do enough to close the achievement gap for diverse students…This must be a top priority for future steps in education reform.”

To this end, the Subcommittee considered recommendations from a panel of educators, advocates, and a researcher working to close the achievement gap for diverse students. They included Dr. Daniel Curry, Superintendent for the Lake Forest School District in Felton, Delaware, Dr. Jack Dale, Superintendent for Fairfax County Public Schools in Falls Church, Virginia, Arelis Diaz, Assistant Superintendent for Godwin Heights Public Schools in Wyoming, Michigan, Dr. David Gipp, President of United Tribes Technical College (UTTC), Jacqui Farmer Kearns, Principal Investigator for the National Alternate Assessment Center, and Michael Wotorson, Executive Director of Campaign for High School Equity.

Statistical Terminology: Why different statistics are used

Descriptive Statistics

Mean: a measure of the general tendency, calculated by adding all the scores and dividing by the number of scores. The advantage over other measures of tendency is that it uses all scores; disadvantage is that it's influenced by extreme scores. It should be used with interval or ratio levels of measurement.
Mode: A measure of central tendency which is the most frequently occurring score in a distribution.
Median: A measure of central tendency that is the middle score of a set , placed in size order. Advantage: not influenced by extremes; Disadvantage: it doesn't use the arithmetic values of the intervals between scores. It requires an ordinal level of measurement and should be used instead of the mean when the distribution of data on an interval scale is skewed.
Standard Deviation: The square root of the variance. It measures the dispersion of the scores around the mean in a normal distribution.
Variance: A measure of dispersion that is eq. to the sum of the squares divided by the degrees of freedom.
Range: Simplest measure of dispersion; measuring the difference b/n the highest and lowest scores. Sometimes the value 1 is added to the difference to reflect that the range is inclusive of the end points.

Inferential Statistics

t-test: finds the difference b/n means b/n two groups. In a one-sample t-test, observed mean is compared to expected mean of the population.
ANOVA (Analysis of Variance): tests for sig. diff. b/n the means. Same results as t-test.
Repeated Measures ANOVA: successive observations from the same source (dog, or person, such as in a longitudinal study). Another e.g. is when the same person is given a treatment of vodka then tested on memory, then comes back in 5 days and is given a placebo.
Correlation: measure of the relation between two or more variables. Correlation coefficients range from -1.00 (perfect negative correlation - negative correlation!) to +1.00 (perfect positive correlation). A correlation of 0.00 means A LACK OF CORRELATION.
Multiple Regression: analyzes the relationship between several independent (or predictor) variables and a dependent (or criterion) variable.
Factor Analysis: reduces the number of variables, and then detect the structure of relationships between varaibles -- that is, to classify the variables. E.g., if we are set to measure people's satisfaction, and ask in a survey how much they like their hobbies and also how much time they spend on their hobbies, the two varaiable will probably have a HIGH correlation, which mean we are probably being redundant with both variables - best to condense.
One can summarize the correlation between two variables in a scatterplot. A regression line can then be fitted that represents the "best" summary of the linear relationship between the variables. If we could define a variable that would approximate the regression line in such a plot, then that variable would capture most of the "essence" of the two items. Subjects' single scores on that new factor, represented by the regression line, could then be used in future data analyses to represent that essence of the two items. In a sense we have reduced the two variables to one factor.
Discriminant Analysis: used to discriminate between two or more naturally-occurring groups. E.g., a school researcher may try to find out which variables differ b/n groups of students who decide to go to college and those who don't, and figure out which variables (SAT score, GPA, etc) predict each.
Chi Square Test: A test that uses the chi-square statistic to test the fit between a theoretical frequency distribution and a frequency distribution of observed data for which each observation may fall into one of several classes.
